Developing countries are facing increasingly the challenge of sustainable management of their cities and communities.

To find jobs and a better life, people from rural areas move into cities, living under bad conditions. According to the UN, the number of people living in slums has increased from 807 million in 1990 to 883 million. Overpopulation of cities result in serious social and political conflicts, overexerting the capacities of public institutions to deliver public services to the people. Combined with an increased air pollutions and lack of water & sanitation services, the municipalities are facing almost impossible missions.

On the other side, the underdevelopment of rural areas with lack of job opportunities due to the absence of a sustainable economic development and the required infrastructure, advance the negative trend of moving into cities. To overcome this situation, it is of importance to develop concepts that provide equal living conditions in both- urban and rural areas- by executing tailored programs for the development of cities & communities, based on the a holistic approach to provide economically viable, socially responsible solutions.
