Sustainable urban and rural development

Developing countries are increasingly facing the challenge of sustainable management of their cities and communities. People living under bad conditions in rural areas move into cities to find jobs and a better life. According to the UN, the number of people living in slums has increased from 807 million in 1990 to 883 million. Overpopulation of cities result in serious social & political conflicts and overexertion of the capacities of public institutions to deliver public services to the people. Combined with an increased air pollutions and dearth of water & sanitation services, the municipalities are lacking to provide the basic facilities to the public.

On the other side, the underdevelopment of rural areas due to the absence of a sustainable economic development and the required infrastructure, further trends the movement towards cities. To overcome this situation, it is of importance to develop concepts that provides equal living conditions in both- urban and rural areas- by executing tailored programs for the development of cities & communities, based on the  holistic approach to provide economically viable, socially responsible solutions.
